When we think of “Jonah” what do we normally think of ?
A whale?
A big fish?
Well you are right, the whale is in the story but the narrative is not really all about the whale.
The book of Jonah points us towards a missionary God. It reminds us God is a God who saves and he wants us to join in on His mission.
Jonah is a reluctant missionary and we can often be reluctant too. The person at school says ‘Wait don’t you go to church? Are you not a Christian? “ what do you do? Freeze? Speak fast? Run away?
The person in your work place sits and bad mouths the church what do you do? Say nothing? Hide behind your sandwich?
Your neighbour knows you are a christian and is struggling in life? We know we should show compassion and share the good news, but do we?
Jonah reminds us mission can be difficult, but we will see that God can help us even if we feel like running away.
